Off Season Triathlon Workouts

Dear Friend,

Many things may happen in the triathlon off season, which typically here in North America consists of the months of November through about March or April. You can lose motivation, get fat, or lose track of your goals. However, if you go into it with a plan, you can actually improve your overall health and fitness level, without having to train as much!

This is the perfect time to shift your focus a bit…instead of spending hours and hours training, it’s time to get focused. Are you going to work on your swim technique? The drills in The Triathlon Swimming Essentials are a great place to start.

Are you looking to keep building your overall endurance (but at the same time not have to spent countless hours in your basement on your trainer)? Check out some of the off-season workout plans below.

Whatever your goals are, this is an exciting time of year for training, as there isn’t a race on the horizon for several more months (and I’m speaking of the northern hemisphere here), and you can really make gains in key areas as well as physically and mentally get ready for next year.

To off season success,
Kevin

“Have a plan. Follow the plan, and you’ll be surprised how successful you can be. Most people don’t have a plan. That’s why it’s is easy to beat most folks.”

-Paul “Bear” Bryant, football coach, University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide.

Endurance Nation Coached Off Season Training Plans

Get a head start on your competition!

My friends over at Endurance Nation have developed some fantastic plans if you are looking for some guidance this winter. And, the cool thing is you can choose your focus- bike, run, or balanced focus!

Just looking at the results their clients have achieved this year tells me they are doing something right!

From Coach Patrick: “Over the last five years of coaching age group triathletes both 1:1 and through thousands of training plans, we’ve learned the reduced volume of this time of year creates the opportunity to focus on high rate of return training activities and become significantly faster. In just 16 weeks, our athletes improved their Functional Threshold Power on the bike by 15%, their 10k run time by 2:30, and their half marathon time by 4:47…results that were carried through towards PR-busting performances in 2008!”

With the Endurance Nation training plans, you can stop guessing on what to do and know that you will be using your time efficiently for whatever your goals are.
