Getting Sick Around the Holidays
Dear Friend,
As I am now dealing with a slight cold, I look back at the last two
weeks and realize that it could have been avoided!
Holidays are a time for fun, family, friends, travel- along with
stress, eating poorly, and eating too much. I experienced all of the
above over the past few days, yet I continued to run myself into the
ground with work and working out!
To avoid these annoying colds and flus that everyone tells us are
"going around", you have to keep a strong immune system.
The worst thing for your immune system is sugar, so keep this to a
bare miniumum, as hard as that can be this time of year.
The next bad thing is stress in general- traveling and being around
family can add to this. Know your limitations, and make sure to take
time to meditate, do yoga, or just don't get caught up in the
stress!
Finally, overeating hammers immune systems. Since it seems that it's
what "everyone" does around the holidays, the pressure to overeat
can be enormous (at least it is in my household). One way to avoid
this is to not starve yourself all day before a holiday meal.
Healthy snacking throughout the day is key. You can still sample a
little of everything at dinner but won't feel the need to go back
for unecessary seconds.
Since I broke all these rules last week I am now dealing with the
consequences. My training for the half-marathon I signed up for in
January is on hold for a couple of days. My body decided to force me
to rest, since I wouldn't let it!
Keep on track during this season by staying in your routine, but not
worrying about making huge gains.
The Complete Guide to Triathlon Swimming comes with 50 additional
swim workouts (optionally available in waterproof format), that you
can pick and choose from when you hit the pool before training for
your next race. You'll keep on track and never be bored!
I have included a sample workout below. Get to it!
Enjoy,
Kevin
